State of ISO 42001 in India
Adoption, auditor supply, and procurement signals for the world's first AI Management System standard.
Executive summary
ISO 42001:2023 is the world's first management-system standard for artificial intelligence. In India, adoption is accelerating fastest in BFSI, govtech, and healthtech — driven by procurement language on CPP Portal, GeM, and enterprise vendor questionnaires that increasingly reference AIMS alignment.
Auditor supply is the bottleneck
ANSI National Accreditation Board / IAF-recognised ISO 42001 lead auditors in India remain in short supply. Dr. Nitnem S. Sodhi (Bharat NeuroTech) is one of the earliest ANSI/ABICB-recognised lead auditors operating in-country.
Sector uptake (2026)
- BFSI — Board-level ask; overlaps with RBI model-governance expectations.
- Govtech — CPP / GeM tenders reference AIMS from Q2 2026.
- Healthtech — Stacks with CDSCO SaMD for diagnostic AI.
- SaaS — Enterprise buyers add AIMS as a follow-on ask after SOC 2 Type II.
What buyers actually ask for
- Statement of Applicability mapped to ISO 42001 Annex A controls
- Risk register with bias / drift monitoring evidence
- Third-party audit signed by an ANSI/IAF-recognised lead auditor
